Why should built environment practitioners center health equity through the project delivery process?

Centering Health Equity

location: San Francisco, California

year: 2022

I partnered with Mithūn (Seattle) to summarize the research conducted for the "Centering Health Equity" project, which is part of the Green Health Partnership centered on Design for Health. The Framework creates a common language and structure to multiply health equity opportunities in real estate and infrastructure project delivery. The infographic's central message is that no practitioner or organization can do this independently. Still, a better understanding of decision-making throughout the project lifecycle can multiply the opportunities to promote health equity.

The infographics describe the impact of building-level decisions on population health and social equity at various scales before and after applying the Framework.

Since the audience of this work comprised various stakeholders, including developers and designers, the graphics were created to be generic enough to be widely applicable but also specific enough to convey the core principles.

I designed numerous iterations for display and publication and also created an extensive database summarizing the learning from this project.

(Below) My first step was to summarize the multi-year research into a concise spreadsheet that captures the key ideas

I created three different templates that followed the following organizational principles:

1. A cyclical grid depicting sequential processes

2. A "ripple" depicting actions and impacts

3. A traditional tabular grid depicting categories across scales

Each of these categories had pros and cons associated with them. Using the three as guiding templates, a hybrid data organization system was created. It offered the benefits of all three templates while ensuring relationships and scales were readable.

The resulting infographics successfully captured the different scales and categories of impact during the project lifecycle before and after the application of an equity framework.
